Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio occupies a remarkable place in the history of Western art. He was one of the most influential painters of the early Baroque period, an artist whose work transformed the way religious and historical subjects could be represented, and a master of light, shadow, and human emotion. He was also, by all surviving accounts, a deeply difficult man.
